SuperConscious! Seeing With Three Eyes.

SuperConscious! is the theme of September’s Tai Chi Alchemy in Sedona. The idea was central to my talk at the Society for Consciousness Studies Conference in June, and it has been at the core of my research for a long time. This is a continuation of a discussion begun in two recent posts: “Awareness vs. Consciousness” and “Conscious and Preconscious.” If you haven’t checked them out recently, I recommend you do so before going on. It’s ok. I’ll wait. Some will recognize the idea of “Seeing with Three Eyes” from Chapter Six of Taijiquan: Through the Western Gate: Eye… Read More

Conscious and Preconscious

Here are some more thoughts on Consciousness and Awareness, continued from last post. In the last post I distinguished between consciousness and awareness. It’s not an absolute distinction but a pragmatic one. It is useful to think of these words this way…for gongfu, for healing, for living. Awareness: Responsiveness to one’s environment.\ Consciousness: Awareness of awareness. We humans start our journey in a preconscious state: body awareness. It is a fusion state, and the nascent nervous system is unable to differentiate anything. Pure sensorimotor functioning. This holds to about four months, when we start to distinguish the physical body from… Read More

Awareness VS. Consciousness

This is a video of a talk I gave recently at the Society for Consciousness Studies Conference at Yale/TGI. I posted my notes prior to the Conference in a recent blog. It was a real honor to be asked to speak and I am particularly grateful to organizer Allan Combs for his interest and support. Thanks also to Steve Mitchell for the video, as well as for all the organizing he did for the Conference. “Consciousness is a word worn smooth by a million tongues. Depending on the figure of speech chosen it is a state of being, m a… Read More

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life

I have been accused by some friends as being annoyingly positive. They will be complaining about how the world is going to hell in a handbasket, and I’ll ask, “So what was the better time and place to be a human?” The 1940s, perhaps? When 50 million people were killed in the Second World War? Or the 1950s, when we had regular drills in school where we were told to put our heads under our schooldesks in the event of a nuclear attack by the evil commies? I agree with president Obama: if you didn’t know who you will be… Read More
