Society for Consciousness Studies Conference 2017

I will be appearing at The Society for Consciousness Studies Conference 4pm on June 3 at The Graduate Institute in New Haven. Here is Part One of my address at the Conference in 2015. And here is preview of my notes for next Saturday’s presentation. (It could change, but probably not much.)   Presentation: “Finding You in a World of It”   Rick Barrett Notes: Society for Consciousness Studies Conference, June 3, 2017 Yale University/The Graduate Institute, New Haven, CT     “The nameless was there before the sky and the earth were born. Coherence and the Human Microbiome

“Human microbiome”? This was a term that was not really on my radar until very recently. Sure, I had encountered in the past and had some vague ideas about its relationship to health, but it was pretty far down the list of things to think about. Thanks to a fortuitous encounter with Rhonda Wilbur, acupuncturist and PhD candidate in Integrative Biomedical Sciences, that changed very recently. (Here is a study she co-authored titled, “Collaborative study by USF and China partner reveals acupuncture can treat hypertension through antioxidant effects.”) She is researching the relationship of the human microbiome on immunology and… Read More

Instant Meditation? What Does That Even Mean?

I’ve gotten  some pushback lately about my use of the term “Instant Meditation.” It was felt that calling it “instant” trivializes the long hours that experienced meditators spend in their own practice, as if all the same results could be gotten in an instant. This surprised me. I hadn’t considered that it could be read that way. Did I need to call it something else, or just do a better job of clarifying what I meant? What I was trying to say with “Instant Meditation” was that substantially increasing energetic coherence has the effect of clearing the mind and calming… Read More

Exporting Coherence in the New Year

Many of our New Year’s resolutions are quickly left by the wayside for one reason: lack of immediate gratification. We just don’t see results soon enough to encourage our participation for very long. It’s probably why we had to “resolve” to do it in the first place. Our good angel knows that we need to drop ten pounds, quit smoking, meditate for a half hour a day, run a mile, or read La Divina Commedia (after first learning Italian), but pretty soon we’re out smoking behind the gym with the class shirkers, slackers, and layabouts. I’m a big fan of… Read More

Luoxuanzhang: “Spiral Mystery Palm”

Luoxuanzhang is the martial arts equivalent of eating braised short ribs: you can’t believe all that flavor is packed into such a small package. It is astounding how much energy is unleashed in a few movements. When Master Yang Fukui first showed it to me I was dazzled. What was happening? The movements were exquisite and dynamic and…strange. They didn’t seem to follow the rules I had then accepted as fundamental. How could such power be manifested while violating so many of the hoary “truths” I held as gospel? I had to know more. And what I have found so… Read More
