It’s a Good Day to Die

Faolan left us recently. Fifteen years is a nice run for a dog that size. Arthritis made climbing stairs a real chore for him, and took a lot of the joy out of the things he liked to do. But even up to the day before he passed, he made the climb to soak up some spring sun in the backyard. He would still eagerly greet you at the door, tail wagging vigorously. And would eagerly devour roasted butternut squash with the manic intensity of a four year old eating ice cream. For the last month or so, he would… Read More

Sincerity?

The mind and body have an absolute ruler, and that is principle (li); ching, ch’i, and spirit have an absolute ruler, and that is sincerity. Sincerity is the way of heaven, and he who is sincere follows the way of humanity. Both of these are inextricably bound up with consciousness. If you understand the principle of the unity of heaven and humanity, you will naturally absorb the circulating ch’i of sun and moon. This ch’i is the circulation of consciousness, for spirit is naturally concealed within principle. Finally, we can speak of the martial and the spiritual, sagehood and immortality.… Read More

“Finding You” Book Tour Kicks off in Killingworth

Connecticut, that is. Renee Rhodes, sculptor and clinical psychologist, is the living embodiment of Finding You in a World of it. She meets EVERYONE! What an absolute joy! Check out her amazing sculptures. Renee lives on a heavily wooded 11 acres that abuts another thousand acres of state forest. It’s breathtaking. Her sculptures appear like fairies amidst the trees and rocks and streams. So Dr. Rhodes invited 40 or so colleagues and friends for a “Forest Summit” on the subject of healing, and asked Dr. Nancy Reuben and myself to address this group. But let’s let Renee tell the story:… Read More

Resistance

Here are some great thoughts from healer/taiji practitioner Philomena Papirnik (who is every bit as musical and magical as the name suggests). What is the use of resistance? How do we use it in taiji? Where is the strength in being resistant? Or is that not possible. Is resistance the I-It equivalent of the I-You of ‘meeting’, (in so far that it’s fragmentary perhaps?) and that it objectifies? I’ve been thinking I’ve been meeting but yet again, I haven’t. I’ve been resisting some of the time. Meeting’s not just a feeling, is it? It’s everything rolled up into one moment… Read More

Coherence and Resonance

Coherence and resonance are two related terms that sometimes are confused. Coherence refers to the degree of unity within a particular system, like a car or a human body. How much wholeness is present? Resonance is the degree that one system vibrates with another. Do they cooperate or fight? Both are terms that are helpful in describing whether things are coming together or splitting apart. Any living creature can be said to be coherent just because it is alive. It has wholeness, existence as itself. None have absolute coherence. They are more or less coherent moment-by-moment. When highly coherent there… Read More
