Luoxuanzhang: “Spiral Mystery Palm”

Luoxuanzhang is the martial arts equivalent of eating braised short ribs: you can’t believe all that flavor is packed into such a small package. It is astounding how much energy is unleashed in a few movements. When Master Yang Fukui first showed it to me I was dazzled. What was happening? The movements were exquisite and dynamic and…strange. They didn’t seem to follow the rules I had then accepted as fundamental. How could such power be manifested while violating so many of the hoary “truths” I held as gospel? I had to know more. And what I have found so… Read More

21st Annual Tai Chi Alchemy. Part 2

What an incredible weekend! We soared so high, it has taken me a couple of weeks to come down enough to write about it. So much of the really important stuff that happens at TCA is too insubstantial to put into words. Things like that blaze of light when a total stranger gives you a hug that melts you to the core of your being…or when you realize that qi is not just something that you read in a book, but is something you can feel and use…or when you find in yourself that person that you always hoped you… Read More

21st Annual Tai Chi Alchemy in Sedona. Part 1

The 21st Tai Chi Alchemy was held at Mago Garden in Sedona, Arizona September 18-20 and this one was epic, even by TCA standards. The theme this year was, “It all begins with Meeting,” and that set the tone for the most transformative TCA in memory. I went into last year’s gathering with some serious questions about where it was all going. Sure it was fun getting together with these amazing people once a year for twenty years to exchange love, hugs, and explorations in martial arts, energy medicine, energy cultivation, and consciousness research, but I wondered if it had… Read More

RB @ SCS (part 2)

I was excited to present this stuff to the Society for Consciousness Studies Conference at Yale. For many of you, this is what I have been saying and writing about for years, but it’s brand new to a non-martial artist group like this. Most of the presentations were Power Point lectures on rarified topics, delivered from an academic perspective. What I wanted to do was to show how shifting states of consciousness in real time affects the physicality of those involved. I needed some demonstrations that were big enough to be obvious to the audience. In Finding You in a… Read More

What to Expect at Tai Chi Alchemy

Two things on my mind right now: Finding You in a World of It and TCA’s twentieth anniversary in Sedona. And they are on a collision course for September 19-21! That’s right, we’re releasing Finding You at TCA! The book is finished and at the publisher. (Beatrice did a wonderful job copy editing!) Micaela is finishing the illustrations and cover art. And I’m all a-twitter. Western Gate was written primarily for us taiji geeks who want to know what is going on with this strange martial art we spend so much time practicing. This one is for anyone and everyone… Read More
